Biography
Biography
Ángel "Cucco" Peña (born September 1, 1948) is a Puerto Rican composer, arranger, record producer and music director. His work includes collaborations with performers such as Willie Colón, Celia Cruz, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin and Chayanne. In 2024, the Latin Recording Academy presented him with its Trustees Award for contributions to Latin music outside of performance.
Early life and education
Peña was born in Santurce in 1948. The Latin Recording Academy reports that he studied at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico and later performed with the tropical music ensemble Orquesta Panamericana. In a 2021 interview, Peña described growing up in a musical household around his father, musician Lito Peña. He said that his mother enrolled him in the school band while he was in seventh grade, and that he began playing trumpet as a teenager.
Peña said he later began studying popular harmony and arranging on his own while playing in the Orquesta Panamericana, which was directed by his father. He described arranging as a second form of musical expression that developed alongside his work as an instrumentalist. The Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular also identifies him as a graduate of the Conservatory and notes that the orchestra's repertoire included bolero, blues, jazz, rock, pop and Puerto Rican musical styles.
Career
During the 1960s, Peña's Orquesta Panamericana took over as the house band on the television program El show del mediodía, succeeding the orchestra led by César Concepción. A history of Puerto Rican television by María "Beba" García describes the ensemble's performance of Afro-Caribbean plena in the context of debates about the genre's representation on television.
Peña later worked as a composer, arranger, producer and music director. The Latin Recording Academy has highlighted his work on several recordings: he co-produced Willie Colón's 1993 album Hecho en Puerto Rico, produced Marc Anthony's Contra la corriente, served as music director for Gilberto Santa Rosa's live album En vivo desde el Carnegie Hall, and contributed to recordings by Ricky Martin, Chayanne and Celia Cruz. The Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular lists additional collaborations with artists including José Feliciano, Franco de Vita, Jerry Rivera, Lunna and Glenn Monroig.
Peña has also worked in advertising and television. The Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular reports that his advertising work received Cúspide and Addy awards and that he was a finalist at the Cannes advertising festival in 1984. In 2024, Primera Hora reported that he served as musical director and co-arranger for a Banco Popular advertising campaign developed with singer-songwriter Tommy Torres and students from music programs supported by the Fundación Banco Popular.
In March 2026, Puerto Rican broadcaster TeleOnce reported on Peña's work directing a Spanish-language production of the musical Chicago and interviewed him about his early musical studies and career.
Motivos
Peña produced Motivos, an album featuring Glenn Monroig and Lunna. The existing biographical account at Music of Puerto Rico describes it as the first digitally produced album in Puerto Rico. The album's production is also noted in the biography of Lunna.
Awards and recognition
In 2024, Peña received the Latin Recording Academy Trustees Award. The Academy describes the award as recognizing significant contributions to Latin music made outside of performance.
The Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular reports that Peña received more than 60 Cúspide awards and more than 40 Addy awards for advertising work, and that he received 20 recognitions at the New York Festival beginning in 1979. It also records an Agüeybaná award as Director of the Year in 1993 and his selection as a finalist at Cannes in 1984.
